Sam Sheppard – tribute

Founder of the International Breeders’ Meetings

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Sam Sheppard and pay heartfelt respects to the original founder of our federation.

For centuries, the international Thoroughbred Breeding industry had no representative body. Only in the mid 20th century did various individual countries statute their respective Thoroughbred Breeders’ Associations. It was during Sam Sheppard’s role as Secretary of the British TBA, in the 1970’s, that he formed the IBM (International Breeders’ Meetings). Sam was a key visionary in bringing breeding nations together to discuss and resolve breeding related matters and to share information on an international platform. 

In 2012 the IBM was formally constituted into the ITBF (International Thoroughbred Breeders’ Federation). ITBF today is established as the sole international representative of Thoroughbred Breeders, speaking and acting on behalf of 29 breeding nations on five continents.

All of us from within ITBF, and the entire Thoroughbred breeding industry, remain indebted to Sam for his leading role in the evolution of ITBF.

Respected and admired by breeders of many countries, he made lifelong friends involved in all aspects of our industry.

To me personally, Sam was a great friend and mentor. I will gratefully retain many memories of our work and friendship.

‘I first met Sam during his time at the TBA and enjoyed working with him through the ITBA, the Irish Equine Centre, the then IBM and later the ITBF.

Sam was always erudite and urbane. He was the best ambassador for British racing and breeding that anyone could ever meet. His wonderful smile shone like a beacon of welcome. He was a very special person and will be much missed.’
