The Story of Businesswoman and Thoroughbred Owner-Breeder, Kirsten Rausing

An exclusive film charting the story behind the Owner and General Manager of Lanwades and St Simon Studs (Newmarket) and Staffordstown (Ireland). Miss Rausing’s journey through the bloodstock world is a fascinating one to be shared – from the Thoroughbred pedigree-obsessed teenager, through to breeding the World Champion and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine, ALPINISTA. She is the breeder of the winners of over 2,218 races worldwide including 173 Group and Listed wins.

Equine Grass Sickness.

Equine Grass Sickness is a devastating disease with an 80% fatality rate that can occur anywhere in temperate areas of the world where equids are kept. Cases go back over 100 years, but the cause remains unknown. Research hampered by a lack of samples from EGS cases and co-grazer control. 

Our presenters describe what has been learnt to date on the disease. They explain how we can aid critical research progress, leading to a worldwide understanding of the triggers and causes of the disease – and the ultimate end goal of saving and protecting equine lives in the future.

Owners, breeders and veterinarians across the world can now proactively help to propel this research forward and gain the desperately needed answers to this mystery disease. Individuals can now submit data (including historic cases) through the Moredun Institute and Equine Grass Sickness Fund’s Biobank www.grasssickness.org.uk/biobank/ with the Biobank guaranteeing individual case anonymity.

As most will know, the invaluable work of the EIDS and their ‘ITBF initiated’ ICC (International Collating Centre) reporting system of equine infectious diseases has been revolutionary in the control and halting of the spread of infectious disease from country to country. EIDS now propose to include Equine Grass Sickness in their reporting system (asking for country submissions specifying only the general/local region). www.equinesurveillance.org .
