AFRICAN HORSE SICKNESS REPORTED IN MALAYSIA

African Horse Sickness has now been found to have spread from Thailand to Malaysia.

It is at present unclear how the disease has been transmitted and we will advise ITBF members as soon as further information is received.

Since the first reported outbreak in Thailand on 24 Feb 2020, three countries have reported cases of African Horse Sickness (AHS) 

Thailand – 15 outbreaks (in distinct locations) amounting to 604 cases with 562 deaths of a population at risk of 2674 equines – which results in a case fatality rate of 93% (it is now established as having been transferred by illegal importation of Equidae from S. Africa to Thailand)

Eswatini (formerly Swaziland): 1 outbreak reporting 1 case, 28 equids at risk (no deaths have been reported to OIE as yet)
Malaysia: 1 outbreak, 5 cases of 5 equines at risk (no deaths have been reported to OIE as yet)
