Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease

On 3 March 2021, the FEI reported that further to the report of an EHV-1 outbreak with a neurological disease case linked to the CES Valencia Spring Tour on 22 February 2021, they had been informed of additional cases.

 
As of 1 March 2021, 156 horses remain on the competition venue in Valencia. Of these horses 87 have shown clinical signs consistent with EHV-1 infection, more than 24 have tested positive to EHV-1 following PCR laboratory analysis of nasopharyngeal swabs and further testing is being carried out.  Eleven horses have been referred to equine hospitals and five horses have died from the disease.

The biosecurity management of the venue and testing of the horses is being conducted under the direction of the local veterinary authority.

Any horse that has attended the event since 1 February 2021 has been prevented from attending any future FEI events until the FEI’s EHV-1 testing requirements have been fulfilled. All FEI events due to take place on mainland Europe have been cancelled until 28 March 2021.’
