Over 100,000 hectares of permanent grassland are affected to the Thoroughbred breeding industry in the regions of Brescia, Latina, Parma, Perugia, Rieti, Roma, Siena, Novara, Viterbo and Varese.

Around 500 people are directly employed by the breeding industry and around 300 jobs indirectly result from this business. In total, 50,000 jobs are generated by the Racing industry in Italy, including the betting industry.

Auction sales have been organised since 1963 in Italy, first managed by the ANAC, which was then relayed in 2002 by the SGA Società Gestione Aste.
